Reasons You Might Need Re-Roofing Services

In many cases, roof repairs are enough to restore your home’s roof. However, in other circumstances, complete re-roofing services may be necessary. Here are some of the reason’s homeowners opt for re-roofing instead of a quick fix:

\

An-Aging Roof

If your roof is nearing or surpassing its expected lifespan, it may be time to consider re-roofing to ensure your home remains well-protected.

\

Visible Wear and Tear

Cracked, curled, or missing shingles are clear signs of wear and tear. While wear and tear is normal, too much can compromise your roof’s integrity.

\

Water Damage

Do you deal with leaks during rainstorms and obvious water stains on the ceiling? These indicate it could be time for re-roofing services.

\

Storm Damage

Severe weather, such as hail, high winds, or falling debris, can cause significant damage to your roof. Even if the damage isn’t immediately apparent, talk to our team about Re-Roofing.

\

Greater Home Value

A new roof can boost curb appeal and increase your property’s value. Your investment will be especially worthwhile if you plan to sell your home in the next few years.

How Re-Roofing Works

In short, the re-roofing process involves replacing your existing roof with a new one. When a customer comes to us for residential re-roofing, we begin with a thorough inspection of the current roof. Our team will assess the damage and determine if a full replacement is necessary. Once the inspection is complete, the old roofing material is carefully removed. Then, we install a protective underlayment to provide additional durability and water resistance to your home.

With all the underlying work done, our team can install brand-new cedar or composition roofing. No matter which of these materials you choose, you can count on a strong, reliable roof that will protect your home for years to come.

Roof Caps

Roof repair services also include repairing roof caps once an inspection reveals that this may be the problem. For instance, a roof cap may be out of position or loose and requires fixing. In addition, it is essential to reposition or replace the roof cap to avoid water damage.

Drip edges and Valleys

Most residential roofs can develop issues with their drip edges and roof valleys. In some cases, the valley shingles loosen and leak into the house. On the other hand, drip edges wear out or go out of their right position, causing water to drain on the side of the house and not in the gutters. Unfortunately, this could interfere with the home’s siding or affect the foundation.

When installing a new roof replacement, consider the following:

9

Remove the old roofing and dispose of the debris correctly.

9

Evaluate of the roofing sheathing to determine whether it is good enough to reuse or if you have to replace it if there are water damage signs

9

Consider protecting the roof from ice effects if you live in an area where it snows.

Place the drip edge.

Install the underlayment. Note that the roof underlayment comes in two thicknesses. It is meant to be soaked in water-resistant material regardless of whether it is synthetic or felt paper. The thicker underlayment, 30, is more durable, although synthetic materials last longer than the felt paper. If you want a more durable roof protecting material, you should consider investing in durable synthetic underlayment, even though it will be a bit pricey. It is convenient and durable, thus a worthy investment.

Installing Metal Roofing

Before considering metal roofing, you must first decide the type of metal you want for your roof. The contractor will then install a string line at the roof’s peak where you want the overhang to be. Next, put the string line in place to secure the overhangs even around the roof’s edges. Note that you may have to make roofing adjustments as you go along to keep the overhang even since homes are not perfectly square. Fortunately, this is easily achievable with the string line in place.

Ensure the first piece is on the roof square to allow the side or bottom edge to run square with the roof. Make sure to focus on the side of the roof that matters more to you since you may not capture the square on both sides of the roof.

Once you are satisfied with the location, lay the roofing down so that the side with the taller ridge faces right since this is the side you want to overlap with the following piece. Screw the panel down to the roof using screws and rubber washers to help prevent water from getting inside the roof. Metal roof installation is no easy task and requires professionals to help homeowners achieve this dream.

To install this type of roofing:

Calculate the number of shingles you will need for the project to be complete. Basically, you have to measure the roof size and divide it by the size of each shingle.

W

Install the flashing on the roof.

Each of the roof valleys require a flashing installed. First, roll out flashing in each of the sections and lock it in place using roofing nails. When installing shingles around the flashing, you may have to utilize roofing cement to seal openings. Flashing is also needed at the roof section that goes up against the wall of the house for multi-tiered roofs.

W

Install a roof underlayment.

Once the flashing has been installed, you need to prepare the surface for shingles. A drip edge, ice barrier, and underlayment must be installed to achieve this. These will be fixed in place using staples or nails. Start with the drip edge and ice /water barrier first before installing the underlayment. This process may require the input of professionals since a slight mistake can cause serious damage.

W

Install the roof shingles.

Once the underlayment has been fixed properly, then you can now fix the shingles flowing downwards. Shingles should be laid in a row starting from the roof’s edge. Make sure the rows go down, overlapping the starter shingles laid at the bottom.

Asphalt shingle installation may seem like an easy thing to do on your own until you have to master the steps involved. However, it can be cumbersome and even confusing if you have no professional experience to handle it. Therefore, rather than make costly mistakes with your roofing materials, it is advisable to hire the services of competent roofing experts to help you with the process.

Roofing Inspection

Roofing inspection is an almost mandatory roofing service that homeowners should understand. Before any form of roof repair or roof installation is done, there is a need to have a professional roofing expert assess and inspect the status of the roof before any action is taken. But what exactly does roof inspection entail? This refers to the process where a roofing contractor examines or inspects the entire roof for different issues.

When is Roofing Inspection Necessary?

Usually, homeowners feel the need to inspect their roofs after certain events thoroughly. One of the most common times to have a roof inspected is after a heavy storm. However, this should not be the only time to consider your roof’s health. Even without stormy weather, it is advisable to inspect the roof at least once a year, especially before the cold season sets in.

Most people have their roofs inspected to repair and replace the roof successfully. Note that the timing of such inspections is crucial since it affects what happens with the recommendation of the findings.

When the roofing contractors find issues with the roof, immediate repair or replacement is often the next course of action. However, this can only work if the weather is too cold since the replaced shingles will not hold into place as they fail to seal properly. In most cases, such late inspections often have to wait until springtime to have the issues fixed since it can be dangerous to attempt fixing any roof repairs when it is cold.

Who Should Inspect the Roof?

Some people argue that homeowner roof inspection is sufficient. However, while there is nothing wrong with this, a professional roof inspection will always be better. Roofing professionals have a better understanding of what to look for and are less likely to miss any spots. It may be okay to inspect the roof yourself if it is still new, but professional roofing experts are best placed on inspecting for roofs that are over a decade old.

Roofs that are generally below five years with no leaks can be forgiving and may not need homeowners to spend cash on contractors. However, the moment you witness signs of leaks and moisture, a professional roofing expert is needed to confirm the issue with finality. A comprehensive inspection with a roofing expert will save you a lot of cash and effort. So make sure to call your roofing expert for the seasonal roofing inspection you need.

Before bringing the expert to inspect your roof, make sure you know what to expect from them. For instance, you want an expert that understands all aspects of roof inspection. They should be ready to cover structural inspection, material inspection, workmanship inspection, and interior inspection. A wholesome inspection of your roofs is what you need to maintain a healthy roof for years. Sometimes roof replacements may have been avoided if only an inspection was done promptly and recommended repairs covered before things got out of hand.

Fortunately, anyone living in the Pacific Northwest region can reach out to GMZ & Sons Roofing LLC. for all imaginable roofing services. Whether you are interested in a new roofing installation, want constant roof maintenance, or need a quick roof repair service, you can always count on the company to come to your aid.
